Steelhead Crossing Signs and Educational Panels

In 2003, Fairfax Volunteers received a competitive award of $5000 from Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) for the installation of steelhead crossing signs (modeled on salmon crossing signs in Samuel P. Taylor State Park) as well as detailed, site-specific information panels at ten bridge / stream intersections on Fairfax and Cascade Creeks.

The goal of these signs and panels was to increase citizen watershed awareness and concern. Wilderness Way, a local environmental education organization, assisted the Fairfax Volunteers with this project.

Manor School teacher, Laura Honda, and her 4th-grade students helped fabricate the crossing signs. The Stream Life Awareness Campaign Committee (affectionately known as the SLACCers), led by the awe-inspiring Yvonne Roberts, received a supplemental $500 grant for this project from Marin County Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program (MCSTOPP).

For additional information on issues impacting the vitality of our creeks, Friends of Corte Madera Creek, Ross Valley Watershed Program, and the Salmon Protection and Watershed Network (SPAWN) provide detailed studies, programs, and recommendations to promote our local stream environment health.
