E-waste and medication collection, paper shredding
Location: Parking lot near the Fairfax Skate Park, near the Pavilion.
Timing: 10 AM - 4 PM (10 AM - 2 PM for medication collection)
Details: Examples of e-waste that can be collected include computers, microwaves, printers, cell phones, TVs, and remotes. Note: Bulbs and batteries will not be collected. Fairfax Lumber, Good Earth and United Markets collect used batteries. Fluorescent (CFLs), Halogen, and LED light bulbs and batteries can be taken to the Marin Household Hazardous Waste Facility for safe disposal or recycling. Incandescent bulbs may be disposed of in your trash.
The Fairfax Police Department will provide a cautious and convenient method to dispose of drug items. It will be completely anonymous and no questions for identity will be asked. The medication can be left in its original container, or it can be removed from it; if it is being disposed with the original container, it is encouraged to remove any identifying information. We will not accept injectables, syringes, and illicit substances. E-Cigarettes and Vaping Devices are allowed if the batteries are removed.
For paper shredding, you can shred any sensitive documents (up to 2 bankers boxes). Plastic, folders, or binders cannot be shredded. It's ok to leave staples and paper clips.
Compost pickup
Location: Parking lot next to the Fairfax Skatepark off of Bank Street
Details: Please enter from Bank St. to get to the compost and mulch pickup areas. Please do not take more than five 5-gallon buckets.
Background
Each year, the Town hosts Take Back Day in partnership with Marin Sanitary Service and Conservation Corps North Bay. Open to all Fairfax residents, Marin Sanitary offers free paper shredding for sensitive documents and Conservation Corps North Bay offers free collection of electronics waste (e-waste).
The Fairfax Police Department also offers collection of unused or expired medications. Household medications are the number one cause of childhood poisonings. And, they pollute our waterways when they are flushed. The DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back program safely disposes your medicines.
In addition to these services, residents can pick up free compost or mulch provided by Marin Sanitary. Compost is made from the food and yard waste collected in your green curbside carts. Compost can be used as a soil amendment that improves the water-holding capacity and structure of your soil, but too much of it can harm your plants! It is recommended that you use no more than 1-2 inches on your annuals & perennials.
