Renaming Sir Francis Drake Blvd Update

Posted on March 8, 2021

At its March 3rd meeting, the Council supported the concept of renaming Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Specifically, the Council directed its two representatives to the County Ad-Hoc Working Group, Mayor Ackerman and Councilmember Goddard, to report to the Ad-Hoc Working Group the Town’s direction. The Ad-Hoc Working Group consists of representatives from the five jurisdictions through which Sir Francis Drake Blvd runs: Fairfax, County of Marin, Larkspur, Ross, and San Anselmo.

Marin County Board Supports Co-naming Drake Boulevard  (3/10/21)

After hearing from hundreds of residents over the past year, the Marin County Board of Supervisors voted to support two options that would add an additional name to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard – one official and one ceremonial – in sections through unincorporated Marin.

Supervisors Dennis Rodoni and Katie Rice, who represent the unincorporated areas through which Drake Boulevard runs, proposed to take both co-naming options back to a working group that has been exploring the renaming issue since summer 2020. The Board’s 4-1 vote included a dissent from Supervisor Damon Connolly, who favored a wholesale replacement of the existing name.
