Red Flag Warning in Effect for Marin County beginning October 17

Posted on October 16, 2024

National Weather Service condition to remain in place until Saturday afternoon.

Marin County, CA – The U.S. National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Marin County and throughout the San Francisco Bay Area that will be in effect from 11 PM Thursday, October 17, through 5 PM Saturday, October 19. Local fire agencies will increase staffing throughout Marin County.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are expected during the designated time frame. Fire conditions include a combination of strong offshore wind gusts up to 45 mph and relative as low as 10%.

The concern with this weather system is that wildfires that develop have the potential to spread rapidly. Erratic gusty winds may result in dangerous and unpredictable fire behavior. A simple spark could cause a major wildfire. The community is advised to exercise extreme caution.

  • Avoid using any source of heat or open flame outdoors
  • Avoid using power tools (gas or electric), or mowers.

Since the devastating North Bay Fires in 2017, the Board of Supervisors has made significant investments to prepare the County for events like this one. Including the increase in staffing within the Marin County Fire Department, expanding the County’s Wildland Fire Crews, and enhancing the Office of Emergency Management. These efforts ensure early alert and warning capabilities, bolster response readiness, and facilitate investments in fire fuel reduction.
